“Roy was the first person I met in high school: he in the music department and jazz band, me in dance right next door,” Erykah Badu says to Variety about her late friend, trumpeter Roy Hargrove. “We danced to that band’s versions of John Coltrane, Miles Davis. That helped me understand what jazz was, and how to interpret it. It was a subtle rebellion.”
Badu is the co-executive producer of HARGROVE, a film about the jazz musician's legendary career and life. In collaboration with Control Freaq Media and POPLIFE, Badu World Market is proud to present merch in support of the documentary.
On Sunday, October 16, there will also be a screening of the film, on what would've been Roy Hargrove’s 53rd birthday. It will be held at the Montgomery Arts Theater at Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts—the place where Hargrove and Badu struck up their lifelong friendship.
